When Charlemagne started his center for learning, one of the jobs he gave his scholars was to copy all the old manuscripts. Since there were no printing presses, each manuscript was done by hand. Since all books were written to glorify god, each page of each book was decorated with drawings and designs. Many of the covers and pages were covered in gold. This was called illuminating.
